3 little stories

These are three stories that describe my day. Two of them really happened, one is (obviously) fiction.

I went to a volunteers luncheon at my local library today, because my mother and I had volunteered once for a book sale held every year. Anyways, when we got to the library I didn’t know what to expect, but as soon as I saw a few women walk in (wearing dresses), I had two thoughts:

  1. Everyone at this event is older than me… and my mom (JK, there were like three whole people who were younger than my mom).
  2. My jeans and nice(ish) shirt are woefully inadequate

These thoughts soon melted away however, almost as soon as we took our seats. The food was from a restaurant that I love, and someone actually came to sit with us at our otherwise unoccupied table. 🙂

After a bit, the presentation started. It was all about preserving our heritage through the restoration and maintenance of monuments and historical landmarks. It was a really good presentation. I loved to hear about all the different things going on in my community. It gave me a new appreciation for where I live. 😀 I do love my home.

The man who gave the presentation also talked about many people who have the same passion as he does, preserving our heritage. As he talked about them I realized that they all had stories to tell, and that made me tingle with excitement. What I wouldn’t give to talk to those people and learn their whole stories and write about them. Their stories should be told. There are so many people around the world who have stories; unique lives, passions, goals, and cultures. I want to know the people who never get a chance to tell their stories and listen to them.

The Man on the High Wire

Today, I watched a movie called The Walk. I really enjoyed it. The main character, Phillipe, risks everything to walk on a wire, suspended between the Twin Towers (in 1974).

Would I ever risk my life for a thrill, like Phillipe did? No.

Why did he do it? For the thrill, yes, but I believe (from what I saw in the movie) that he did it for other reasons as well.

  1. When he was on that wire he was completely at peace.
  2. When he got off the wire he was changed. He had a new appreciation for others and life. So…

Would I ever risk my life to do something amazing and awesome that I have always dreamed of doing? Yes.

Do that thing. But be sure that it isn’t just for the thrill (that’s really… dumb), not for the money (greed), and not for yourself (selfish). Do it for others. Do it because it is what you love to do.

The Girl in the Mist

Once upon a time there was a little girl who lived in the misty hills of Scotland. She ran around barefooted with a tangled mess of brown hair flying behind her, and she knew every inch of her valley home like her own face. She lived in a stone house that was apart of the sheep farm that her family ran. Together with her two brothers, her Aunt Mira, Mother, Father, and a few cousins, she ran the farm.

If the family farm was Isla’s (the girl) favorite place in the world, than The Next Valley Over (TNVO) was her second favorite. TNVO was the valley that could just be seen from the top of the farthest hill in Isla’s home valley (Ealasaid – YAH-luh-sutch). From that distance the far away valley looked like a distant blur of colors.

Isla loved the colors. It was purple in spring, green in summer, gold in autumn, and white in winter. But always it was blue. There were many things Isla didn’t know about the valley, but she did know that there was a lake in the middle, because that she could see from the top of her hill.

Many mornings would find Isla sitting atop the tallest rock on the hill, looking over the valley and watching the sun rise over it, waiting for the day when she would know The Next Valley Over as well as she knew her own face.

(P.S – I know that it says this was posted on April 29, but it was not. I am here to tell you that it is 11:03 pm and not nearly tomorrow… yet)

Don’t Let Your Heart Be Troubled

It’s hard not to get discouraged when:

  1. there are mountains of schoolwork in front of you
  2. dishes piled in the sink to wash
  3. a blog post to write
  4. no time to do anything fun 😦

I get discouraged by these things all the time. Here are a few of the ways that I use to get un-discouraged. XD

I am not very good at exercising regularly, but whenever I do exercise (usually in the morning, buy anytime will work) my whole day is 10 times better. I have more energy to get done what I need to get done and it makes me happier. 🙂

I know that reading the Bible every morning isn’t easy, but it can really shape your whole day. I don’t know about you, but I need a daily reminder of what life is really all about. It’s not about serving yourself, but serving others. It’s not about getting everything done on my checklist, but glorifying God. Sometimes, reading the Bible doesn’t lift my mood, but it gives me the push I need to change my attitude.

Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness! – Psalm 115:1

Music has a way of motivating me and turning a bad day into a good one, especially classical music. For the past few days whenever I can’t focus in school, or I feel overwhelmed I will listen to the Pride and Prejudice (2005) soundtrack. It is literally the best soundtrack in the whole world. I also find that listening to anything that makes me nostalgic also works. But seriously. Go listen to the Pride and Prejudice soundtrack. right. now.

I hope this post helps someone have a good day. 🙂 I find that the earlier in the day that I do these things, the better my day goes.

Always remember that God made you special, and He loves you very much ~ from every Veggetales episode ever!

April Days

More pictures today because I have been at the soccer field a lot over the past week or so and because I get bored during school sometimes. 🙂

My science book

My sister (Abby)’s artwork

Pictures of the sky at the soccer field (on different days).

April has been good to me, not too many rainy days and not too many sunny ones. I love being able to sit outside on the porch all day while I do school and taking bike rides with my family (which I did yesterday). I also love going to the soccer field and watching/commenting on the game… while trying to do school. I usually (always) end up watching the game and not getting anything done. 🙂

Other things that have been going on:

On Sunday nights (at church) I teach a class of four to seven year-old’s along with a couple of friends of mine. Listening to their (the kid’s) answers to the questions I ask them is really encouraging, because I can tell that they are actually learning something. 🙂

Also on Sunday nights, I sit in on the practice for a play that we are putting on for Vacation Bible School in June. I’m in charge of the sound effects and whatnot. I love my job. 😀 The play is so hilarious and I love watching my friends (and my sister Abby) get into character.

Big news! Today, I watched a how-to video on Rey’s (from TFA) hairstyle in the movie! I tried it out and am happy to report that it is really simple and fun to do! Here’s the link. (Yes, it is supposed to start in the middle)

Disney Shows

Ah, Disney shows, those stupidly funny and ridiculous shows that were a huge part of my childhood. 🙂 They make me laugh today, but years back they were THE BEST. Today I just want to share some of the shows I watched as a youngster.

1. Good Luck Charlie

This show was my life when it was on the air (Actually I watched it on Netflix)! I watch it now and it is absolutely ridiculous.

I always loved the show because of how cute Gabe was, the funny things Charlie said, and Teddy’s awesome outfits! I just loved her clothes so much!

As the seasons went (dragged) on I grew less and less interested in what was happening. It seemed like the same things were happening over and over and over again. Then, they had another baby (Toby). That was when the show really began to go downhill. I just felt like adding a new kid was a cop-out.

Anyways, I have really great memories of watching this show with my family and talking about it with my friends. 🙂 We all watched it.

2. Hannah Montana

Hannah Montana was one of those shows that has just really stayed with me through my childhood. I watched this show forever! I haven’t watched it recently, but I can still remember being sooo sad when it ended. 😦

I don’t remember much about Hannah Montana. I remember the episode where Miley revealed that she was Hannah Montana. Best. Episode. Ever. I can also remember how long Miley’s hair was in the last season.

Annoying people: Jake and Rico. Especially Rico. 😐

3. Wizards of Waverly Place

My mom never liked this show, but she never said we couldn’t watch it so we did! :/ Wizards of Waverly Place was one of those Disney shows that I always knew was stupid. There was just something that about it that was…ridiculous. I think I just liked it because of Justin. One other weird thing about this show was that Max turned into Maxine for a few episodes… it was just… weird.

4. Sonny With a Chance

I loved this show. It was probably my favorite for the two seasons that it lasted. It had such potential! I really wish that it hadn’t ended so soon.

Anyways, I loved Sonny with a Chance. It was such a funny show and Sonny was such a great character. 🙂 At least what I remembered of her.

Yep, I remember when Disney shows were life. 🙂 Now, they are just ridiculous.

The Force Awakens (slight spoilers)

The more I think about Star Wars, the more I love it! I really want to watch all of the movies again ASAP!

On Friday night I watched The Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Here are my  reviews for them:

The Return of the Jedi

This movie is the perfect conclusion to the series. It wraps it all up and creates a bitter-sweet feeling in me. I don’t know if there was anything that I really didn’t love about this one. I loved how Luke was an actual Jedi in this one. He was all-of-a-sudden a very wise person who was sure of himself and what he was doing and what he stood for. Han and Leia, and their relationship was, once again, well done. I love them together!

The ending of this movie was bittersweet, but I think that made it all the more touching and sweet. 🙂 This movie is just the perfect conclusion to the trilogy.

The Force Awakens

This movie…

I didn’t know what to expect going into it, but it more than lived up to the expectations I had going in! It was epic!

Rey – Awesome and sweet and strong! I love Rey for all that she is, and all that we don’t know about her yet. Her character is already well developed and I cannot wait to see what happens to her next!

Finn – I love him soooo sooo sooo much! He might be my favorite! There is something so awkwardly charming and cute about him! He cares about Rey and really wants to do something to help the Resistance. There is just so much that I love about him!

BB-8 : Absolutely the cutest thing… ever! Just look at it! Cutest. Droid. Ever.

Han – Still love him. Will always love him 😥 I seriously think he has really changed, maybe not a lot, but he has changed. He’s gotten older and wiser. Of course, because he is older. 🙂

I don’t think that I’ve seen the movies enough times to make decisions about the rest of the characters. I don’t know why, but I feel like once I watch them again than I will. I’m glad that they are all back again (especially Luke!!!). Even the slightly annoying characters (CP-30) are charming because everyone is back! 🙂

The Story

Amazingly done, I must say. Everything about it seemed to have A New Hope vibe to it. I almost felt like I was being reintroduced to the world again. It was fun, because I felt like I was discovering it all with Rey.

That’s all for tonight… peacin’ out. 😛

freakyyodaGood-Night. XD

I was going to write a review for the two Star Wars movies that I watched yesterday but… I’m going to take a break from that for today and write about something else that I have been super excited about lately. Writing.

I came up with an idea a few days back and I began to expand upon it. I actually posted a snippet of it in a past post. I’m really excited about continuing to understand the setting, the characters, and the plot. Once I have somewhat of an idea for this story, i’ll probably talk about it on this blog, but for now nothing is set in stone.

Today, I want to talk about pre-writing, which… isn’t really writing at all. Pre-writing is that time in a writing project where no actual writing takes place. Basically, you come up with ideas, figure out the characters, research, and construct the plot. This process is different for every writer and every project, but it is basically planning.

For me, for this particular project, pre-writing means figuring out a basic direction in which the story is going to start out in, finding where it’s going to end up, and knowing my characters as much as possible.

For this project, I really need to know where my characters are going and how this experience is going to change them. If the plot isn’t perfectly planned out then… who cares? As long as I know where my characters will be at the end than I can figure out the rest as I go along.

Some of this may sound a little strange to people who aren’t writers. For instance, “getting to know your characters” probably sounds a bit strange. Don’t worry, it’s just the way writers speak (or at least this writer does 🙂 ).

I’ll write more about the writing process as this idea of mine progresses! 😀 That is, if it progresses…

Another Star Wars Review

Last night, as you all know, I watched The Empire Strikes Back, and tonight I watched Return of the Jedi (as I write this we are about to start The Force Awakens. 🙂 ). So today I will review both movies (V and VI).

The Empire Strikes Back

Great movie, but I liked the first one better. I don’t really know why I like A New Hope better, maybe because everything seemed more, well, hopeful. In this movie, everything is a bit more serious.

Things I Liked:

  • I got to know the characters better
  • Yoda
  • Han and Leia
  • Luke’s character growth

Things I Didn’t Like:

  • I wanted more a lot in this movie, which I guess is a good thing, I’m not really sure. I want to watch it again to figure things out better. 😀 I want to see more of Luke as he was training to become a Jedi. What I mean is after he leaves Yoda, how does he know all of the stuff that he does by the next movie? Maybe I’m missing something. Maybe Luke went back to Yoda between the movies, but I doubt that. I just wish I could see more of his training I guess.
  • The main characters were almost always split up 😦

I know this review isn’t making any sort of sense but… I’m tired, O.K?

Yes, this movie was good. The romance was sweet, but not too long and drawn out. I am so glad that it wasn’t all about the romance, but just sprinkled in naturally… if that even makes sense.

I loved, loved, loved Luke in this movie. He really grows into who he is supposed to be. His change from a young, impatient, headstrong kid into a patient, wiser Jedi knight, was seamless.

Of course, Yoda is also great! I love how absolutely crazy he is! I find it absolutely hilarious how he laughs at his own jokes!

Pt 2 Tomorrow! Sorry this is sooo late!

Another Day, More Star Wars

Another day. More school. The daily grind. So. Much. Fun. 😐 Sitting here watching my siblings soccer game (3-5, we’re losing), while I am supposed to be doing school and wishing the game had been cancelled so we could watch Star Wars, I realize that today has been a boring, regular day.

Here are some names I like.

Girl: Gray, Marlin

Boy: Winston, Arthur, Rowan

I think I may use some (or all) of these for the story I am developing. We’ll see what comes out of it. It is still a tiny seed of an idea at this point.

Just watched The Empire Strikes Back. 😊 Loved it! Will review it tomorrow. Methinks I am happier now.

Search your feelings. You know it to be true.

Such fun.

Wrote this last night…never published it :(

I am frustrated by a lot of things.

  1. I feel like I never get anything done. Ever.
  2. I can never relax because there is always something to be done.
  3. When I get a lot done, it’s never enough
  4. I didn’t have time to practice piano today! 😥
  5. I have an idea for a story that will probably never have a beginning, middle, or end!
  6. I always do these posts super late in the day!

Yeah, that was me complaining. Here’s me… not complaining?

  1. Picking flowers with my sister XD
  2. Story ideas
  3. More fun times with little kids
  4. Four square (a fun game) at church
  5. did get time to relax today
  6. Fragole (Italian) and waffles (thank you sister!)

I listened to music today:

  1. The Blues (Switchfoot)
  2. Hello Hurricane (Switchfoot)

I wrote (a tiny bit) today. Here is a snippet:

It was a warm afternoon, just as spring was coming into full bloom, and everything hinted that summer was nearing quickly. The air was full of that lovely sound, the orchestra of a neighborhood in spring. The hum of lawnmowers and passing cars mixed with the happy sound of children playing to create a summery background noise. The twitter of a dozen species of birds and and the rustling of tiny leaves completed the delicate waltz.

Good-Night, Sleep Tight…

Wait! Here are some pictures of Twenty One Pilots:

The End

Nostalgia and Bubbles

Today. Was. Tiring. I don’t know whether i’m tired because my family babysat two little boys in the morning, or because we watched three little girls in the afternoon, OR because we had all five of them at the same time for a few hours. 😉 Whether or not I’m tired, one thing is for sure, I had a really great day! 🙂

Some days are beautiful because something absolutely amazing happens, or because the whole day is perfect, but some days are beautiful because of their abundance of simple joys.

Have you ever thought about how beautiful bubbles are? The way the morning light hits them when you’re “slicing” them apart with “lightsabers” alongside a four year-old is absolutely beautiful. 🙂 I love bubbles. There is something so lovely and childish and nostalgic about them.

Speaking of nostalgia. Hello Hurricane by Switchfoot is giving me creepy-crawly-nostalgia-feels all over. I am listening to it at. this. moment. It is amazing. You should be listening to it too, because it is such a lovely album! I used to listen to this album on repeat years ago, and it is still amazing!

Hallelujah, I’m caving in. Hallelujah, I’m in love again. Hallelujah, I’m a wretched man. Hallelujah, every breath is a second chance. – Always (From Hello Hurricane)

I think bubbles are beautiful because they seem so magical. Little spheres of soap, floating through the air, clothed in a shimmering, rainbow. How magical is that?

And nostalgia, what a wondrous feeling. The strangest thing is that nostalgia is also a sad feeling. There is something so beautiful in the fact that something as simple as a certain smell, a movie, or anything at all can trigger such an emotional response, (at least in myself) simply because it reminds us of days gone by. The sadness comes when we, inevitably, think about how much we miss the past. That is sad for two reasons:

  1. Those old days really are gone forever… 😥
  2. Sometimes we forget that today can be pretty good as well

I know that nobody lives a perfect life, but we can all choose to be joyful. I think if we are always stuck in the past we forget that our life now is important, because it’s what defines our future. Living in the past is depressing.

That said… how lovely is nostalgia!? I think it’s a lovely feeling, even if it is sad sometimes. Just remember that the rest of you life is ahead of you. Never be so caught up in the past that you can’t see that there are things to do and see here in the present, and dreams to dream of the future.

I’m losing ground and gaining speed. I’ve lost myself, or most of me. I’m headed for the final precipice, but you haven’t lost me yet... I’ll sing until my heart caves in. No, you haven’t lost me yet. Yet (From Hello Hurricane)
